Pick up at our hotel to visit the huge salt lake Salar de Atacama. We will start driving south heading for Toconao, a village where the locals manufacture white volcanic stone sculptures. The houses in this small picturesque village are built from the bricks of this white volcanic stone, which lend the town a very unique appearance. The church and its bell tower are also built of this bleached white volcanic stone. After Toconao we continue on to visit the worldÂ’s largest salt lake: the Salar de Atacama. It is an inland sea formed millions of years ago. It is a unique experience to view the vast plain of the octagonal shaped salt crusts in the middle of the driest desert on earth. It is also home to various species of flamingoes as well as many other birds. The Laguna Chaxa, part of the Reserva Nacional de los Flamingoes, offers a terrific opportunity to get close to these birds in their natural habitat. In the afternoon return to your Hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. Back in the Hotel we are able to relax a bit at our room and in the evening we can depart again to visit the Moon Valley during a Half day Excursion. It is part of the Natural Reserve Los Flamencos and about 18 km west of San Pedro, which is administrated by the Atacameño Community. This surreal site is one of the most spectacular in the Atacama Desert and is called this way because of its unique geological formation which reminds strongly of the moon landscape. Here we will explore this marvelous scenery and visit the strange shapes, nature has formed out of salt and clay.
