PATAGONIA PUR

(16 Days / 15 Nights)


A special nature experience awaits us on this 16-day road trip across the Chilean and Argentinean Patagonia. In addition to the proximity to scenic height points on the road we find countless opportunities to encounter with the locals: there are farmers, gauchos, and small cozy family hotel businesses. We experience the wonderful expanses of Patagonia with a comfortable vehicle, and find cozy and clean properties out of the simpler category is the ideal place to unwind by. 



DEPARTURE DATES AND AVAILABILITY


DAY 1: SANTIAGO
1 Night Boutique-Hostal Rio Amazonas.

DAY 2: SANTIAGO –  PUERTO MONTT – PUERTO VARAS
After breakfast, transfer to the airport. We fly along the Cordillera de los Andes to the capital of the Lakes Region, Puerto Montt. Here our driver waits for us with a comfortable minibus. The ride will take us to our hotel on the southern section of the Panamericana Highway in the City of Roses, Puerto Varas.

DAY 3: ACTIVITIES A LA CARTE
After a good breakfast there are several activities to choose from: a rafting trip on the Rio Petrohue, a hike at the foot of the volcano Calbuco or an escorted trip to Frutillar (each with minimum of 2 persons per activity).


DAY 4: PUERTO VARAS - CHAITEN 
Early departure towards the south. On the way to the Carretera Austral we use small ferry crossings and travel through a totally pristine landscapes of Pumalin National Park.
Arrival in Chaiten, a small town in reconstruction after the eruption of a volcano in 2008. We discover the preserved and destroyed part of the village, and learn a lot about the tremendous hardships of the local people after their return. Early evening visit to the rustic thermal bath Termas de Amarillo.

DAY 5: CHAITEN - PUYUHUAPI
Today we continue our journey on the famous Carretera Austral, the extension of the Chilean Panamericana. The rustic bumpy road penetrates deep into the untouched wilderness, along the turquoise Rio Frio, glacier-capped mountain ranges, idyllic lakes and picturesque waterfalls. We reach our small family hotel in the village Puyuhuapi.

DAY 6: QUEULAT NATIONAL PARK - COYHAIQUE

Today we start with a 3-hour hike that will lead us through the National Park Queulat. We will get to a point from which we enjoy the beautiful view of the hanging glacier "Ventisquero Colgante" and its waterfall.
Then we drive along the lush vegetation of wild Carretera Austral continuing south on. Huge Nalca plants and giant ferns adorn the wayside, dense forests, peaceful fjords and snowcapped peaks form a legendary ancient landscape. Through the romantic valley of the Río Simpson we reach the capital of the Region, Coihaique.

DAY 7: COYHAIQUE –  LAGO GENERAL CARRERA
Today we leave Coihaique drive through an increasingly barren steppe landscape and cross a deep valley, where the rock glows in a variety of colors. On "Devil Pass" opens us a fabulous view over the massif of Cerro Castillo to the peaks and glaciers of the northern ice fields. In the valley of the Rio Murta begin the endless southern beech forests and from afar illuminate the turquoise waters of Lake General Carrera.

DAY 8: LAGO GENERAL CARRERA
Day trip to Glacier Exploradores. Along the way, we will have stunning views of several glaciers foothills of the vast ice fields San Valentin.


DAY 9: LAGO GENERAL CARRERA – PERITO MORENO (ARGENTINIEN)
Along the Lago General Carrera we approach the border to Argentina
via Chile Chico. The climate is changing, we reach drier steppe. Chile Chico is also known as the Chilean "Sun City", with cherry planting and other fruits due to its surprisingly mild climate. Shortly after crossing the frontier we reach the town of Perito Moreno.

DAY: 10 RUTA 40 ––  FITZ ROY MASSIV
Today we reach the legendary Route 40, which continues to take us through the endless steppes of Patagonia to the south. The Lago Cardiel, with its milky turquoise glacier-melt water brings color to the strong precisely because of its monotone as impressive landscape. Away from the Ruta 40 we approach the Andes and again in warmer weather we soon see the fantastic rock formations of the Fitz Roy massif. We reach El Chalten.

DAY 11: FITZROY MASSIF
The Fitz Roy massif is world famous for its treacherous ice walls, unpredictable winds and constantly changing weather. Trekking enthusiasts from all over the world hike the many trails in Los Glaciares National Park and also we will explore the spectacular mountain scenery in a several-hour easy hike after breakfast.


DAY 12: CALAFATE - NATIONAL PARK LOS GLACIARES
Today we drive to the emerald Lago Viedma passing through the vastness of the Argentine pampas to Calafate on Lago Argentino.
Immediately afterwards we head to the Perito Moreno glacier. At the entrance of Los Glaciares National Park, the treeless pampas is been transformed almost seamlessly into dense southern beech forests. The southern arm of Lago Argentino appears with milky turquoise color against the gray clouds walls of the southern ice fields. The Perito Moreno Glacier, with unimaginable force pushes huge ice masses of the continental ice fields down into the valley, the thunderous crashing fall from the blue and white cliffs in the lake. The icy river moves up to 2 meters per day, making it one of the few growing glaciers in the world. We observe this magnificent spectacle from a platform nearby.

DAY 13: EL CALAFATE – NATIONAL PARK TORRES DEL PAINE
 
Today we cross the last time the Argentine pampas on our way to the Chilean border. We then head directly to the Torres del Paine National Park, which is one of the highlights of our trip. Herds of guanacos on gently undulating steppe landscape, rugged red-gray crags, granite towers, milky-green glowing white shimmering lakes and ice fields combine to form a magnificent panorama.
In a clean but simple with shared refuge we spend the night to start one of the most spectacular walks in the park in the morning the next day.

DAY 14: NATIONAL PARK TORRES DEL PAINE
Today, we start a hard trekking tour to the foot of the Paine towers, the Torres. The first line consists of one hour climb to the valley of the river Asencio, with stunning views of the surrounding lakes. Within the following part we reach the viewpoint of the granite pillars: the towers of the Paine Massif.
As a simpler alternative, a 2-3 hour hike to a lenga forest is offered in the northern part of the park (minimum 2 people).
In the afternoon return to the Refugio.


DAY 15: NATIONAL PARK TORRES DEL PAINE – PUNTA ARENAS
Today's destination is Punta Arenas, the southernmost city in Chile. On our way we visit the nearby Cave of the Milodon. The German colonist Eberhard found here the remains of prehistoric animal "Milodon", whose statue can been seen in life size. During the city tour in Punta Arenas we can look at the historical Magellan Strait, which separates the mainland from the island of Tierra del Fuego.
The last overnight of the trip is in a comfortable 3 * hotel in the city of Punta Arenas.

DAY 16: PUNTA ARENAS – SANTIAGO
